What is the Piña Colada cocktail?

This post is going to be fun…

The one and only… the LEGENDARY… PIÑA COLADA!

The piña colada has been a staple of tiki drink culture in the USA, and all across the globe. You may see this drink mostly on cruise ships, boardwalk bars, or even your neighborhood pub. This cocktail has evolved to become the drink of the masses; Just about anyone can enjoy this classically simple drink.

HISTORY

The piña colada is credited to have been originally made in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1954. A bartender named Ramón “Monchito” Marrero claims to be the first to have created the drink.

To this day, there is also Ramón Portas Mingot, who claimed it being created by him at Barrachina Restaurant in 1963. There is a plaque on the restaurant wall that commemorates Mingot for the creation.

As with any great cocktail story, which one is right?

RECIPE

Now, the greatest thing about the piña colada is that it is super-simple and anybody can make it. So long as they have a blender!

Here is the recipe if you are going to make in a blender:

1.5oz (45mL) Coco Lopez

1.5oz (45mL) pineapple juice

1oz (30mL) aged rum

1oz (30mL) coconut rum

Blend until smooth. Serve into a tiki glass (hurricane glass) with a long straw.

Garnish: pineapple wedge

You may also decide to hand-shake this cocktail:

2oz (60mL) white rum (I like Ron Matusalem, Platino)

2oz (60mL) pineapple juice

1.5oz (45mL) Coco Lopez

Shake all ingredients vigorously in a cocktail shaker. Fine strain into a glass with crushed ice, crown with a bit more crushed ice.

Garnish: pineapple wedge and a couple drops of angostura bitters.
