What is a Dark and Stormy Cocktail?

Dark and stormy can only be made with Goslings, according to their trademark protection. Of course, this is not always the case when it comes to bartenders mixing their own concoctions and variations of this classic.

This super-simple cocktail has its mark in history and will forever be an important drink to memorize as a bartender.

HISTORY

The dark and stormy is the (unofficial) cocktail of Bermuda. This is a highball cocktail that is claimed to have been created around the time of the end of World War I. The trademark set up by the Goslings brothers was in 1991, officially.

The story goes simply, that British sailors visiting Bermuda decided to mix their homemade ginger beer on board the ship with the native Goslings rum. The name probably came from the long and treacherous voyage that the British sailors had to endure at sea for long periods of time.

The Goslings Bros. trademarked the drink and protect it aggressively. They have filed lawsuits against a blog, Pernod Ricard, Proximo Spirits and more in the effort to reinforce their authority over the naming of the drink “Dark ‘N Stormy”.

RECIPE

Super-simple, only consists of three ingredients. It is a good one to enjoy at any time of the year.

2oz (60mL) Goslings Black Seal rum

4-6oz ginger beer

lime slice

Preparation:

Pour rum into the bottom of the glass. Add ice, and then top off with ginger beer. Serve with a lime wedge. Sometimes, you can add a splash of extra lime juice on top, if desired.
