What is the Caipirinha cocktail?

Its mid-spring time in New Jersey, and its about time the great cocktails enjoyed in warm weather come around.

The caipirinha is the national drink of Brazil, and is an amazingly refreshing and delicious drink to have during the warmer season. If you like the taste of sugar cane, this one is for you!

HISTORY

The caipirinha comes from the word “caipira”, which directly translates to “countrified” or somewhat “rustic”. It is said to have been one of the major factors to help control the Spanish Flu back in Brazil during World War I.

This drink can ONLY be made with cachaça, which is Brazil’s national spirit (we will get more into the spirits’ history and process in another post).

RECIPE

2 oz (60mL) Cachaça

1 half lime cut into wedges

0.5 oz (15mL) demerara rich syrup

To prepare, have a rocks glass ready. Place the lime wedges and demerara syrup into the bottom of the glass and muddle. Add the cachaça, and top off with some crushed ice. Stir gently to incorporate all ingredients. Then, top off with more crushed ice to finish.

Garnish: Lime wedge or wheel

No matter what part of the world you are enjoying your caipirinha from, it will always bring you back to the beaches! This is one of my favorite no-fuss cocktails to have for sure.
